El Paso driver killed in traffic accident at West Side intersection during power outage
An El Paso driver died after a Tuesday evening collision when traffic lights were down at a West Side intersection due to a power outage, police said.
The two-vehicle collision occurred about 6 p.m. during a blackout at North Resler Drive and Paseo Del Norte.
Gilberto Millot, 56, was driving a 2011 Toyota Corrolla westbound on Paseo Del Norte, slowly attempting to make a southbound turn onto North Resler, an El Paso police news release stated.
Chase Thouvenell, 33, was driving a 2019 Dodge Ram 2500 with two passengers, an 8-year-old girl and a 3-year-old boy, police said.
Thouvenell was heading north on Resler "when he failed to slow or yield to traffic as he entered the uncontrolled intersection" and collided with Millot’s car, police stated.
Millot, of the 200 block of Summerbrooke Court, was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. Police traffic investigators were notified Wednesday that Millot died from his injuries, officials said.
Police said that driver inattention and failure to yield on the part of Thouvenell, of the 1600 block of North Resler Drive, were factors in the collision.
On Tuesday evening, El Paso Electric reported a power outage impacting more than 700 customers in that northwest El Paso neighborhood.

The El Paso Police Department reported that there have been 49 traffic-related deaths this year compared with 38 at this time last year.
