2 Community Education graduates earn El Paso Electric scholarships
The El Paso Electric Company awarded two graduates from the Community Education program in the Socorro Independent School District with a $1,500 scholarship each to continue their education in a postsecondary institution.
The two recipients were Eun Jung Sung and Eloy Palomino, who took classes in the Community Education program from July 2019 to May 2020.
The generous contribution from EP Electric allowed for the first scholarships that the SISD Community Education has awarded graduates from the program.
EP Electric representatives presented the scholarship to SISD Community Education at the program’s graduation ceremony on July 25 at the SISD Student Activities Complex.
“We’ve learned that there are a lot of businesses out there that have money and support community programs like ours,” said SISD Director of Community Education Anthony Fraga. “They want to award our students with scholarships; we just have to look for those opportunities.”
The scholarship winners both plan to continue their education at El Paso Community College.
Palomino plans to study agricultural science as he wishes to expand on his career as a data analyst for the dairy industry.
“First scholarship I’ve ever applied for and I got it,” Palomino said. “I was super excited, receiving it was a big blessing and a huge help to continue my education.”
Sung studied fashion design in her home country of Korea and worked as a fashion designer when she moved to Los Angeles.
When she made her way to SISD, she improved her English-speaking skills by taking the professional English course in the Community Education program. She hopes to continue her education and eventually become a substitute teacher.
“SISD has been so kind to me,” Sung said. “They have lots of opportunities to offer and I almost gave up but I didn’t thanks to my teachers.”
Assistant Director of Community Education Isabel Justo said they hope to take advantage of more opportunities in the future to be able to award more students.
“We are always looking for ways to help out our students,” Justo said. “For us, it’s not enough to just participate in our program, we want our students to move forward and do something with what they’ve learned here.”
